Amazon to Invest Over €16 Billion in Germany in 2027, Including €4.8 Billion for AWS

Following its announcement of a €33.7 billion investment in Spain last March, Amazon is stepping up its expansion across Europe. The US technology giant plans to invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027, strengthening its operations in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, logistics, and digital services.

The investment plan was unveiled on October 20 in Berlin during the German government's Invest in Germanysummit. According to Reuters, Amazon has already invested more than €100 billion in Germany since 2010.

The new funding will support several initiatives, including the expansion of Amazon Leo, the company's satellite network formerly known as Project Kuiper, further development of its logistics infrastructure, and the production of new content for Prime Video. However, Amazon has not disclosed how the €16 billion will be allocated across these business segments.

AWS Allocates €4.8 Billion to Cloud and AI Infrastructure in Frankfurt

Of the total investment, Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to allocate €4.8 billion in 2027 to expand its Frankfurt cloud region and strengthen its artificial intelligence infrastructure. The initiative aims to address growing demand for cloud services, data storage, and computing capacity as businesses accelerate their adoption of generative AI technologies.

This latest commitment builds on AWS's previous investments in Germany. In 2024, the company announced plans to spend €8.8 billion on its German data centers between 2024 and 2026. However, AWS has not specified what proportion of the new €4.8 billion investment will be dedicated exclusively to AI-related infrastructure.

Germany remains a key market for AWS, which provides cloud services to major industrial and commercial companies, including BMW, Siemens, Adidas, and Zalando. Expanding its Frankfurt infrastructure will allow AWS to support these customers' increasing requirements for cloud hosting, storage, and high-performance computing.

Alongside its Frankfurt expansion, AWS is continuing to develop its European sovereign cloud offering. Available in Germany since January 2026, the European Sovereign Cloud operates on infrastructure located in Brandenburg, separate from AWS's existing cloud regions.

Amazon plans to invest €7.8 billion in this sovereign cloud initiative by 2040. According to AWS, the platform is designed to ensure that customer content and metadata remain within the European Union, with operations managed by EU-based personnel.

This €7.8 billion commitment is separate from the €4.8 billion earmarked for the Frankfurt cloud region in 2027, reflecting AWS's broader strategy to expand its European infrastructure while addressing growing demand for digital sovereignty and AI computing capabilities.
